Adverse Possession

“Adverse possession” is a legal doctrine under which a person who does not have legal title to a piece of property can acquire legal ownership based on continuous possession or occupation of the property for a certain period of time, under certain conditions. This doctrine allows the possessor to gain title to the land without the consent of the original owner, provided specific legal requirements are met.
