Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)

Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) is a severe form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when the brain experiences rapid acceleration or deceleration, causing widespread damage to the brain’s axons. Axons are the long, thread-like nerve fibers that connect different parts of the brain and enable communication between neurons. DAI typically results from high-impact events such as car accidents, falls, or assaults, where the brain is subjected to intense forces that cause it to move violently within the skull.
