Pro hac vice

“Pro hac vice” is a Latin term that means “for this occasion” or “for this event.” This term is often used in legal contexts when an attorney who is not licensed to practice law in a particular jurisdiction files a motion or application to participate in a specific case within that jurisdiction. To be eligible, the out-of-state attorney must be sponsored by a local attorney who is licensed to practice in that jurisdiction. If the court approves the pro hac vice motion, the out-of-state attorney can represent a client in that particular case only, even though they are not licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the case is being heard.
